17+ sewing patterns to craft your own, cozy holidays! (Updated - October 2024)
This Christmas gift card holder is so easy you could probably sew it in your sleep. The only thing that would take some brainpower is juggling with the measurements, so the gift card actually fits in. So I'm sparing you that and giving you a free template to use - just so you don't need to do that funny math stuff when cutting into your fabric.
You can also mix and match it with these cute DIY gnome ornaments that can double as a fun gift topper too, or use this beautiful Christmas stocking pattern to create a matching home decor for the holidays.
Oh, and have I mentioned this diy gift card holder pattern is a scrap buster? All you need is two pieces of 5 by 6" in matching, preferably Christmas-themed prints. And same size scrap stiff interfacing. And a piece of ribbon, if you will. That's all - unless you want to make a matching diy advent calendar (but that's another story entirely 🙂

Which interfacing to use for a gift card holder
I used woven fusible interfacing that's practically identical to the non-woven Decor Bond, but you can also use Pellon Deco Fuse, or Vilene S520. Having said that, let me add that especially if you're just starting out on your sewing journey, fusible fleece will work totally fine, too! As you see, there are hardly any limitations as to the interfacing on this project.
And just in case you're using home decor fabric for outer and lining, you can just opt for a thin layer of, say Pellon SF101 Shape Flex or Vilene G700 - or eliminate it altogether. Easy-peasy! But I digress. Back to the how-to:
How To Make A Gift Card Holder Tutorial
Step 1 - Get the free gift card holder pattern
Download the Homemade Holidays - Free Pattern Bundle HERE (it includes a bunch of free templates) and print out the page with the 'Christmas Gift Card Holder Pattern'.
Step 2 - Cut fabric
When you have the paper template, cut 3 pieces: 1 from outer fabric, 1 from lining fabric (MIRRORED!) and 1 from stiff fusible interfacing - cut this one on the seam allowance to reduce bulk:
Step 3 - Apply fusible interfacing to the outer piece
iron fusible interfacing to the wrong side of the exterior fabric piece.
Step 4 - Add Ribbon to Top
Grab the ribbon and fold it in half, then pin it to the right side of the outer piece at the spot where I placed the triangular marking on the free template.
This will be the top part of the Christmas gift card holder. Use a safety pin to attach the rest of the ribbon to the middle area of the fabric piece, to keep it out of the way.
Step 5 - Sewing step
Now place the outer and the lining right sides together so all the edges match and stitch around, leaving a hole for turning at the bottom edge.
TOP TIP: Teh perfect spot for the turning hole is at the bottom edge, just on the opposite side from where the ribbon is attached.
Step 6 - Turn right side out
Turn right-side-out and press, making sure the unfinished edges at the opening are folded in, forming a straight line:
Step 7 - How to Fold The Gift Card Holder
No topstitching yet, first you need to fold the piece in half, like this:
Now, press the crease, pin, and edgestitch around. Done!
Tie a bow, tuck a gift card inside, and get ready for gift-giving! I hope you liked this how-to sew a gift card holder tutorial.
Variations - How To Make It Even Prettier
If you want to, you can tie a ribbon around the gift card holder or hang it on the Christmas tree. Beautiful! These simple pockets are a cute way to say happy birthday, or happy holidays, or even create one as a wedding gift.
This way, you can ditch the old plain gift card envelope and turn your card into a unique diy gift! You can even add a fun felt ornament as a gift topper - I've just made a list of easy felt ornaments for you to check out.
How do you give a gift card in a fun way?
There is no better way than tucking it into a handmade gift holder. For even more excitement, you can hide it in a scavenger hunt or attach it to a small item that matches the theme of the card (like a whisk for a cooking store gift card). Adding a personal touch, like a handwritten note or cute bow, makes it feel extra special!
And here are a few creative ways to give multiple gift cards:
1 - Holiday Gift Card Tree: Make a set, using different holiday-themed cotton prints. Hang them on the Christmas tree as ornaments, so recipients can pick their own from the tree - an interactive and festive surprise!
2 - Fabric Gift Card Garland: Sew a variety of colorful fabric gift card holders and string them along a festive garland. Hang the garland on the mantle or doorway, allowing each person to pull down their own gift card holder as a fun way to "unwrap" their gift.
3 - Gift Card Advent Calendar: Create 24 mini gift card holders in a range of seasonal prints. Number them and hang them on a display board or clothesline. Each day, the recipient can open one to reveal a new gift card, adding excitement to the holidays!

Either hang them on a Christmas tree and mark them for each recipient so they don't get mixed up, or make a fabric gift card garland out of them, or - take a look at the previous chapter for details and more creative ideas. Giving a gift card can be fun!
No extra wrapping is needed if you're using this fabric gift card holder pattern. Just add a bow for a little extra flair - it looks adorable (check out the photo above where I did just that)!

I can not locate the template for the gift card holder.

You HAVE to make these!!! They are so fun and, like all of Damjana’s tutorials: they are easy to make and useful and people LOVE getting them as gifts. I made mine out of matching fabric to her key ring/lanyard tutorial. Instead of the cute bow, I attached a small D ring to hook it to the key ring or lanyard. The card fit is perfect, so I don’t worry about the card coming out. It’s great if you are off to lunch and just want your debit card for lunch and not your mother purse. So many thanks to you DamJana for your easy, practical and beautiful tutorials! Thank you for being so generous with your ideas, free patterns, and kindness.

Judy thank you so much!

I made it! Yay. I did a larger one to fit the whole cardboard packaging. Thanks for the great idea.

I have made a bunch of these and I always get complimented on them. LOVE them!

I just made the gift card wallet and I LOVE it. It's exactly what I needed. I had made something similar from another blog, but it was fiddly and in the end, it was so tight, I couldn't get the gift card in. Thanks so much!
