Is Aliexpress a good place to buy bag hardware?
A word of caution referring to Aliexpress (and Temu, for bagmaking hardware!) If ordering there, be very picky on which companies to buy from. I have ordered from a few just to figure out it's not what I expected. So far, I've had good experience with ordering from the Meetee store on Aliexpress, and from Leathercraft Store. None of these two is super cheap and the shipping times are long, but the quality is good.
Can I get good-quality bag hardware on Temu?
It goes the same as for Aliexpress. I tested a shop named Metallo on Temu, and their shipping was pretty fast, as well as the quality of their swivel clasps is ok - that means, standard.
Where to buy ½" bag hardware?
See this tiny piece of hardware in the photo below? Read on!
Many of my patterns like the Aiden Cell Phone Purse and the Enya Wallet Bag patterns call for the smallest, ½" hardware like D-rings, a slider, and similar. 3 quick ideas for those:
- Lauren at More Me Know sells ½" hardware, see page two here
- Emmaline Bags too, carry these here
- Dan Supplies on Etsy
Where to buy zippers to sew bags?
You've noticed a lot of shops above are also zipper shops. Though I've accumulated many zippers (probably more than I'll ever use up), I am always on the lookout for more. I also wrote this guide on zipper sewing, with shops selling zippers, check it out.
And More:
And there's more. I compiled several guides you will definitely need to sew bags:
- see what's the best interfacing for bags (our interfacings guide)
- last but not least: where to find good fabric online!
Oh, nearly forgot: sewing machines (you do need one. right.), here's my post on stronger sewing machines. Check it out if your current machine cannot handle fabric layers when sewing bags.
A Few Tips on Bag Hardware
How do you protect bag hardware from scratches?
To keep bag hardware from scratching when sewing a bag, cover the hardware with masking tape or painter's tape. This provides a protective layer between the hardware and your sewing machine's presser foot, reducing the risk of scratches.
Also, avoid dragging the hardware against the surface of your sewing machine or work surface, as this can lead to scratches too. (trust me.)
What bag hardware color or plating should I choose for my bag?
Bag hardware can be plated with various materials, and the most common ones are here:
- Nickel - a popular choice for bag hardware due to its shiny silver appearance and I love it because I do not need to think about what color of fabric to use with it. It goes with everything!
- Gold plating gives that sleek and polished look to a bag. It is often used for high-end bags or accessories where a premium look is desired.
- Silver plating is just a tad more shiny than the regular nickel option - classic and timeless!
- Brass plating has a warm golden hue, like solid brass hardware. It's similar but has a lower price point than solid brass.
- Gunmetal is in trend! I love the dark, matte finish with a subtle metallic sheen.
- Antique is perfect for that beautiful vintage look.
- Or use rose gold bag hardware for a feminine touch and modern finish!
I'm a beginner. What color of bag hardware should I choose?
To make it easier, I would go for nickel-plated hardware, it goes with everything. Also, it makes it easier not to run out of sliders or swivel clasps just when you'd need two more. (Which seems to always happen to me right before a new bag release lol)
If you know all the specifics about the bag you are making, the fabric/materials, and colors, then it's a different story: order a set in a matching finish - just make sure to order them all at once, in the same shop, as the finish will vary from time to time.
It’s always best to buy all your bag hardware from the same place to match the colors perfectly.
Conclusion
Whether you're a beginner or a seasoned bag maker, finding the right bag hardware and bagmaking supplies can be a challenge. I hope that this one was helpful, and that you liked our guide to the best online sources for all your bag-making needs. Happy bagmaking!
