How to make pom pom gnomes - STEPS
Step 1 - Print the template (page 19) from the FREE Holiday Bundle
Join our mailing list and get the Free Homemade Holiday patterns BUNDLE emailed to you:
Download to your device and print out page 19. Cut out the template.
How To Print this PDF file
Download the pattern file to a desktop, open it in ADOBE READER, and print at 100% size on paper or cardstock. (I recommend not printing directly from a browser window or from mobile, it could cause issues.)
Step 2 - Create a Felt Gnome Hat

Cut the gnome hat piece out of red felt. Fold it in half along the sides and stitch using a ยผ" seam allowance. Turn right side out - hat done!
NOTE: After sewing, there will still be a small hole at the top, it's required to pull the yarn strand through.
Step 3 - Wrap the yarn for a pom pom

For a pompom gnome body, we'll need to make a floppy pom pom. The easiest and quickest way to do it? This is how:
- grab a small piece of cardboard (anything around 5" or 6" wide) and start wrapping the yarn around.
- If your yarn is super bulky like mine, 15 wraps will be enough.
- with medium yarn double, with fine yarn triple the number of wraps.
Step 4 - Make a Pom Pom

- Cut a 10"- 13" strand of yarn.
- Slide the yarn bundle off the cardboard and place it on the strand you've just cut.
- Tie the strand around the middle of the yarn bundle, creating a tight knot to secure the center of the pom pom.
- Now, take your scissors and carefully cut through the loops on both sides of the yarn bundle. Do not trim a lot, the pompom strands need to hang loosely towards the bottom.
Step 5 - Attach Gnome Hat

Grab the two loose ends of the long strand of yarn that was used to tie off the pompom and pull the ends through the hat from the bottom through the hole at the top.
I used a bodkin with thick yarn, you might have some other tool at hand.

Tie the ends of the yarn strand you used to secure your pom pom into a knot.
Gently fluff and shape your pom pom gnome, trimming any longer strands if needed.
Step 5 - Attach Nose
You can either call your ornament finished or go an extra step - add a nose:

Either hot glue or sew the mini pompom to the bottom edge of the hat, and your pom pom gnome ornament is finished.

Popular Questions
How to make a round pompom gnome head?
Instead of a looser pompom, with longer strands, you can also opt for a small, full, and round pompom as a gnome head. In this case, the pompom needs to be small enough to fit into the small pointed gnome hat:

To make a full pompom, wrap the yarn around two or three fingers - but make sure it is not larger than the opening of the felt hat, as it will need to fit in. Trim it into a small ball, this one needs to look full and round.

Here's a photo of pompom gnomes without a nose and I think they are just as lovely, and even quicker to create:
