Diy Christmas tags Video and Tutorial
Here's how to make these lovely diy Christmas gift tags, first a quick slideshow just an overview:
Step 1 - Print the template (page 16)
Join our mailing list and get the Free Homemade Holiday patterns BUNDLE emailed to you:
Download and print out page 16 from the Free Homemade Holiday Bundle. There are three sizes of gift tag templates, I chose the medium size for this tutorial. Cut out the template.
Step 2 - Cutting Step

From the template, cut one piece of felt and one piece of fabric (cut the fabric on the dotted line). Felt will be the backing layer and is slightly larger, and the slightly smaller piece of fabric will be the front layer. Using two layers provides stability so you don't need any interfacing or interlining of any kind. (Keeping your project simple and quick ๐
Step 3 - Create Embellishments

Use my template to trace the small items like a stocking, mitten, candy, tree, or candy cane on the fusible web. Then cut the pieces, place them on the backside of your (colorful!) fabric scraps, and press over it. Cut on the line, and your embellishments are ready to be added to the gift tag!
If you haven't worked with fusible web yet, see here how to use fusible web to add applique to anything - it makes it so easy for you!
BONUS TIP: from time to time, I make just these, stack them in a tiny storage box and have them ready to add to any gift or fabric gift project. Sweet as candy!
Step 4 - Attach Embelishments To the Fabric Tag

Remove the backing paper and press onto the fabric tag you cut in step 2 (i.e. on the fabric piece, not the felt backing piece). Then (optional!) stitch around the shape to make the bond more permanent. I do not always stitch, see one of the tags with the red stocking further down in this post.
An Alternative Way To add Embellishments To Your Diy Christmas Gift tags
Simply put: use felt. In the image below, I did the tree with fabric (and fusible web)and the star with felt (no fusible web, just topstitched around). If you don't feel like using fusible web, you can make felt embellishments too.

Simply use my template to cut items from felt, like the star shape above. Tack it to the fabric using a dab of school glue or sewing tape like the one in the picture (my favorite!) Topstitch around the shape to attach permanently to the fabric.
Step 5 - Attach the hanging loop and join 2 main layers

Last thing to do: place the fabric template piece on the felt backing piece - the felt is slightly larger, and stick the hanging loop between the two layers at the top edge. Then either glue or stitch around the fabric to finish the tag.
Funny, but it takes a lot more time to read this than to actually make one ๐ Just in case you are pressed for time, you can also use these simple free printable holiday tags, and save the above tutorial to Pinterest using THIS link for later use.
